Costumes for the play “Dutchman” by Leroi Jones (Amiri Baraka).

Designed in Fall 2011, for THEA 48: “Costume Design”, taught by Laurie Churba Kohn

Leroi Jones’ “Dutchman” has a very primal, bloodthirsty feel. I decided to theme the 60’s-era costumes on an Aztec sacrifice. I used the six-colour palette of the Aztec codices (black, white, yellow, green, light blue and red) and motifs from the codices, sculptures and modern Nahua clothing to create an atmosphere that’s more subdued at the start, only to descend into violent chaos at the end of the play.
