Van Gogh-Monet Fashion Project

Gare Saint-Lazare by Claude Monet  Champ de Ble aux Corbeaux

A fashion collection attempting to translate Van Gogh’s “Champ de blé aux corbeaux” and one of Monet’s “Gare Saint-Lazare” paintings onto fabric.

Designed in Fall 2011, for THEA 48: “Costume Design”, taught by Laurie Churba Kohn

In this fashion-line, I tried to combine the air, light and space from the Monet painting with the intense colours and emotion present in the Van Gogh. Both artists use the technique of allowing short single-colour strokes to merge into a large complex-coloured image: I tried emulating this motif using perforations, glittery fabrics, layered fabrics, sequins and colour. Additionally, with the evening wear and the day-wear, I wanted to create designs that were flattering to larger, more “normal-sized” women.
